Nunzia Picciallo is a multidisciplinary artist from the South of Italy. Her creations range from dance, performance, visual art, abstract painting.In addition to creating and performing, Nunzia is a certified Gaga teacher, the movement language developed by Ohad Naharin.
A fundamental element of Nunzia's work is intuition which serves as a creative spark in approaching a new project. Often very intimate and emotive, the creative process, like the performance itself, is an adaptive and continuous research that she experiences through different media.
As a multidisciplinary artist, Nunzia is interested in experimenting with different arts and removing the ingrained understanding that each particular medium belongs to a specific place. “It is essential for me to commit to being honest with myself, to find a performativity that sincerely embodies what I am, or what characterizes the performers/dancers with whom I work”.
In 2019, Nunzia premiered her first solo performance “IF__”, in Tel Aviv where she performed it in several venues like “Hagra Cultural Center”, “Beit Tami”, “Arab-Hebrew Theatre”, then took it to the “Sheik Abreik” festival and Officine Culturali. “IF__” was selected to be part of an evening with the poets of the Poetry Association of Tel Aviv.
For a few months in 2019, Nunzia has been part of the Nomad Campus team (Panama) as a movement mentor for a group of non-dancers, with whom she created a final performance called “HUMAN FLOCK”, which performed as part of the event “Arte al Parque”. As a member of the project’s leading team, she is researching and creating alternative paths for adult education. During this time, Nunzia taught a workshop for the dance department at the University of Panama, as part of the “Prisma dance festival”.
In January 2020 Nunzia premiered “NO TIME FOR ART”, a site-specific solo performance for the “1:1 Center for Art and Politics” in Tel Aviv. In March 2020, Nunzia was a resident artist of the “1:1 Center for Art and Politics”, where she performed in live streaming "MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME".
In the same year Nunzia collaborated with Elena Bolelli in the project "Overwhelming" which was selected and founded by MOVIN'UP SPETTACOLO – PERFORMING ARTS 2020 promoted by MIBACT Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism; their video CUT finalist in Mobile Dance Film Festival, and was screened at 92nd Street in New York.
Between 2020 and 2021, Nunzia created a series of visual works and short films presented on online virtual platforms like Metamorfosize, Virtual Show by Cinematica Festival and Mobile Dance Film Festival, MysteryArtroom. The short experimental movie RED has been screened at The Next Generation Film Festival, Marconi Art Festival, Rassegna SoloAssieme.
In 2021 she premiered NICTOFOBIA a live performance for the performative event Excavations curated by Laura Catini, for the Roman Quarry of Appia Antica, later performed at Fortezza Est - Rassegna Pillole.Nunzia was selected to create a short film for Wom Dialogues, a project of Brancaccio Danza, supported by the Ministry of Culture. The film OUTLOOK will be screened at the Artsite Fest.And created a short performance for Corpo Mobile Festival.
Nunzia is the award winner of Circle Contemporary Dance Contest 2021.
In 2022, Nunzia started the creation process for the protect W am I, initially supported by Big Factory with an artistic residency at Spazio 13 (Bari). This creation is also supported by Associazione Culturale Ri.E.S.Co.W am I was selected for the Vetrina della giovane danza d'autore 2022 (Network Anticorpi XL) and performed at Festival such as Ammutinamenti, Sirene Performin Arts, Prospettiva Danza Teatro, and at the space of Spazio Recherche, Cie Résonances (Paris), Artist Commons (Brussels).
The short version WAMI (2023) was invited to perform at the 27th International Solo Tanz-Theater (Stuttgart), and received 3rd Price Performance. Nunzia will be touring different cities in Germany with WAMI in November 2023.
Between 2022 and 2023, Nunzia started the research and creation of OFFICINA, a site-specific protect selected by the call 'Abitare': a residency project conceived by Equilibrio Dinamico with the support of the Municipality of Andria, the Pugliese Public Theater, Castel Dei Mondi Festival, in collaboration with Officina San Domenico in Andria. Thi research will continue in June at DAS Dispositivo Arti Sperimentali, Bologna.
AS PERFORMER
Nunzia worked with Israeli and international choreographers, and multifaceted performance artists such as, Lilach Livne, Omer Krieger, Tami Dance Company, Penthouss, Marten Spangberg, Edo Ceder, Francesca Fini, Alex Miritziu, Dana Hafouta, Omer Krieger, YY live art, and performed works by Shahar Binyamini, Osnat Kelner, Idan Sharabi, Roni Chadash, Iratxe Ansa, and as a guest performer for Import Dance.
EDUCATION
Nunzia is a graduate of “Dance Arts Faculty” (Rome) where she was part of original creations by Mauro Astolfi, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, Shumpei Nemoto.
After her graduation, she moved to Israel to continue her studies with "Batsheva dance company Excellence program" and at “Dance Workshop Ga'aton” (north of Israel).
Back in Tel Aviv, she was invited to be part of “LaCollectiZ”, a research program for performers led by Ido Feder and Lilach Livne.
In 2019 Nunzia was invited by Ohad Naharin and Bosmat Nossan to be part of the Gaga teachers training program, which she completed in 2021.
AS A TEACHER
As a certified gaga teacher and movement lab facilitator, Nunzia is invited to teach in festivals, professional courses, and companies in different cities in Italy, and in other countries, such as at the University of Panama City, No Gravity Theatre Company, Balletto di Roma dance company, District Dance Festival, DanzArt Festival, Prospettiva Danza Teatro, ICH International creative hub, RIDA program, Milkshake Project Paris. Marameo and Dock11 in Berlin, amongst others.
When in Rome, she produces her own classes and workshop both for professionals and for non professionals.
